TiBe - Optical Tracking of Animals

We implemented a observation system for the VetMed Vienna which allows an efficient method for the research of learning behavior of rats. Several training conditions can be investigated by recording the paths chosen by the rats in a labyrinth or a field and then statistically analyzing those paths.

The rats are filmed from above and their paths are computed in real-time from the gained images. In an open field these tests are conducted in darkness; infrared lighting makes the tracking possible even under those conditions.
